3. Inventing friendlier metrics

A subtler tactic is to change what counts as progress. Absolute emissions are straightforward: did total pollution go down or not? But when that answer is inconvenient, companies can turn to “emissions intensity,” emissions per unit of revenue, or narrower packaging definitions. There is some truth in that explanation. AI does require immense computing power, and data centers consume enormous energy. But here again, the issue is not merely that the task became difficult. To be fair, some decarbonization challenges are genuinely hard.
